It's a good thing. Why would it be a bad thing?! My personal general rule of thumb is that you can send a very polite follow-up note in 3 weeks. You don't want to be pushy, but you don't want to be too lackadaisical. If you don't follow up at all, I'd think, "man this writer doesn't give a crap so why should I?" You might expect an answer in 2 weeks, 2 months, or never. One never can tell.
