Agents for potential deals in global market

I have two sources in two countries, considering two different scripts of mine. This seems like a good time to have at least a potential agent waiting in the wings in case negotiations commence. I realize everyone wants an agent but with a possible deal hanging in the balance, maybe they'll take my call? Anyone know of companies or individuals open to hearing from me?

Dan MaxXx

Honestly, if your scripts have "heat" with star names attached to a real production company, every Agent or manager in town would take your call. Its free money for no work. Easy 10% commission.

Brilliant news Kathryn. I wish you every luck with both projects :-)

Thanks! Just listened to the webinar (Stage 32, of course), on the Development Process and his experience is that the producer/production company will refer you to an agent. But since these producers/companies are not US-based, not sure that will work in this situation. (here's hoping I have a situation to worry about).

Regina Lee

Hi Kathryn, this is a complex situation, which sorry to say, I don't have time to fully discuss. And your personal situation is really none of my business! To tackle one part of the situation, if you need someone to negotiate 2 potential international deals, the ideal situation would be for you to find an agent or attorney who does regular biz with these companies and therefore, knows what they typically offer and what a fair deal for you would be with that specific buyer. If these companies are big companies like the BBC, then what I would consider "major" agencies will know those rates. However, if these companies are not doing regular biz with US talent, then most US agents will not know what they typically pay and what a fair deal for you would be. I would suggest you try to cross-reference -- see who these companies typically do deals with, who reps those writers, and if those same people would take you on if a deal is pending.

You don't really need an Agent, but you will need an entertainment lawyer.

Dan Guardino

It is nice you have people considering your screenplays but until there is an offer on the table you don't need to hire anyone. If they make you and offer then you can use that to try and secure representation or hire an entertainment lawyer. Agents are going to jump on board until you have a real buyer ready to make an offer. Good luck and I hope one or both come through.

Good advice all, thanks!
