Hi Bruce, getting in the door with Casting is admittedly not my area of expertise. Thus, I'd like to offer you advice from Joanna Colbert, a friend and my former colleague when we both were execs at Universal Pictures. She is a very well-regarded Casting Director in LA. She addresses just what you're asking. http://www.castittalent.com/blog/2014/01/corresponding-with-casting-dire...
Thanks to you both Laura and Regina. Unfortunately, I already reached out to a casting director on twitter asking the same question and umm..... Well, Got no response and an unfollow. So yeah there's that. The things we wish we could take back, right? (sigh) I'm not gonna give up or stop asking questions but I am gonna be wiser about where and to whom I ask.
Bruce, from what I can tell, you didn't do anything "wrong." But as you know, if you ask someone out for a drink, sometimes they say yes, and sometimes they say no. Getting turned down doesn't necessarily mean you were in the wrong.

No it's considered solicitation and unprofessional. The move of an amateur.
Thank you Laura! :)
