How much impact does a screenwriter's gender, race or sexuality have on how they are perceived by key decision makers within the film industry?

The good news is, they have no idea about any of that stuff until after they have read your screenplay and loved it and called you in for a meeting. By that point, it's probably too late. No one can tell your race or sexual preference or height or weight (thank God!) or anything else from your screenplay.

In addition, the "key decision makers" have many years of experience, and they've worked with people of many different ethnic backgrounds by now. You won't be the first or the last.
Thanks for all of the comments thus far. It's been really useful to read them ;-)
Despite what some feminists might tell you, it has very little if any affect on "decision makers". it does affect the optics though. A studio today will probably be more likely to buy a script about racism from someone who isnt white. Thats not because of talent or writing, it's because of impending twitter backlash.
