Screenwriting : Format of noise. by Craig D Griffiths

Format of noise.

I want to have the visuals completely different to the audio. Not just simple voice over (which also part of it). But complex audio design. How would you format this for clarity. Any good examples in scripts you're read? Thanks.

This scene is someone in a police interview. We don't hear them, but we hear the audio from another scene over the top, some VO, but the noises from activity. I write with visual tone. How I would make the movie. Things like specific transitions etc. This is a specific opening scene, so the audience can see all her actions after this point are based on a lie. Save having an exposition dump later.

Craig, I'm thinking something along the lines of:

INT. POLICE STATION OBSERVATION ROOM - DAY (MOS)

Visible through the two-way mirror, an investigation takes place in the next room.

Note* All accompanying audio to this scene is from another scene at an earlier time.

No specific examples come to mind but I think so long as your intent is clear to the reader then it shouldn't cause you any problems.

Apologies for the formatting. It looks like crap and runs together on the app, not sure how this looks for you, Craig but each sentence is meant to be a separate line.

Thanks Pierre I use the app as well. For people that focus on formatting to portray intent the app kills me. VO is easy because it is obvious. But noise in a VO context is hard to get across because it is easily confused with action in the scene.

I do stuff like this sometimes. I'd love to see what you decide to go with, or what you hear from others regarding it. Thanks!

Since the sounds are from off-screen or in the background, you should format it appropriately - either OS SOUNDS (and the types of sounds) or BG SOUNDS (and the types of sounds).

Dan G I know I am trying to get a really clear and uncluttered format for this. It is a simple thing but hard to describe without effort in the reader's behalf.
