So was wondering who has done some Webinars on Stage 32?

This morning I browsed through the webinars and bookmarked some of the one I'd like to watch soon. I am always busy and like the fact you can just learn what you want when you want with the advent of the internet. So who has done some? And how did they get on? And are all you guys self taught or are some after doing creative writing in college or are transitioning from some other area? Would love to hear people's stories on this.

Regina Lee

I taught this class: https://www.stage32.com/classes/How-To-Hook-Your-Reader-In-Only-5-Pages

When I had to prep my lesson plans, I watched this class to learn the format and found it to be very impressive. I had my work cut out for me. https://www.stage32.com/classes/How-to-Write-a-1-Hour-TV-Pilot-and-Posit...

S.J. Robinson

Hey Regina, will look at both now. It's a great idea I think for the future of learning.

S.J. Robinson

Ya, Gil, I have to say that I watch a lot of what I dont know online. It can be so handy when you need to learn something fast :)

Doug Nelson

Beth suggested some while back that I might be willing to do one - but I'd rather work with and mentor new screenwriters one-on-one.

Beth Fox Heisinger

Do what fits you best and makes you happy, Doug. ;)

Beth Fox Heisinger

Hi, S.J. I've done several webinars. I had the pleasure of taking Regina's insightful class, and highly recommend it—it's rather an eyeopener to the importance of those first 5 pages! Lol! She includes great examples and breaks it all down. :) I also recommend Max Adams and Conrad Sun. I've taken various webinars from both. Anyway, they have been very helpful to me throughout my development, and I plan to keep taking more. Hope that helps!

Hi Regina Lee didn't realise how knowledgeable you are, your resume is very interesting! Do you prefer the TV side of things? And I would really love to know what you find the most interesting about your job?

Thanks Beth Fox Heisinger. Yes, her class looks good. I only came across these webinars when I saw the Robert McKee webinar advertised. Are you a writer yourself? I missed your ones, maybe cus I was looking for sth in particular. Everything is completely new to me right now and I'm trying to absorb as much as I can. I have to say this site has been great... and can only get better!

Regina Lee

In response to SJ, it's not a matter of "preference" for me. If I find a new project to work on, or if I am given an opportunity with a new project, then I direct my efforts toward whatever path I feel would be most viable for that project, whether that be feature, series, digital, etc. The agent/manager(s) or other parties (if any) involved will also very helpfully weigh in on what path they feel is most viable. I don't really have the luxury of preference. I have to have irons in the fire and go where the opportunity is. Ask a painter if he/she prefers painting a house blue, red, or yellow, and the painter may well say "I paint professionally, and I simply prefer a job that I know how to do." My job is different every day, which I find "interesting," and I am able to learn something from nearly every person I do business with. I enjoy seeing how other people, who are really incredibly accomplished in their jobs, go about actually doing those jobs. That's really all I need to say about myself, as this forum is about craft and strategy.

Regina Lee

Dan, you should reconsider. It would be valuable to hear different POVs.

Martina Cook

I did the one about loglines, one of the best webinars I have ever attended. And cheap! Which helps....

Martina Cook

A squirrel yes, but with a hat :)

Shawn Speake

I have taken quite a few webinars. Perks of the gig. They're all solid.

Beth Fox Heisinger

Sorry you'll just have to take Regina's class for yourself, Shawn. And I really like Dan G's "Sinatra Squirrel." ;)

James Drago

I've done at least 4 and loved them all.

S.J. Robinson

No problem Aray :) and nothing wrong with being a self-taught hack Dan!

Martina, i didn't see one about loglines, but I have to say Stage32 community has already been so helpful already in getting one of my loglines into shape.

I think I am going to do one about pitching. I read way too much stuff on what a pitch should have and shouldn't have and it got me so confused that I ended up with total "brain fog" as a result :/ I would have been better just to wing it, as I know my story inside out and have total passion for the subject it takes on!! You live and learn (^^,)

Loglines: Sell Your Story In A Single Sentence - short but to the point!

Doug Nelson

No Martina - loglines do not sell a story/script by themselves. It's kinda like fishing in that your logline is the bait but just because a Producer bites doesn't mean you'll land a deal. A good logline behind a compelling story (properly formatted) will certainly perk up a Producer's ears but it's you the amiable, 'team spirit' and cooperative writer that can close the deal.

S.J. Robinson

Great insight Doug Nelson Would like to ask you your thoughts on Story vs Hook? An agent wrote give me Story plus Hook plus Voice. How would you approach this?

Martina Cook

Sure Doug, all helps. This webinar was good for me because it made me realise that if I can’t simplify my story in few words, it means I don’t know my own story clearly enough. I think the title of the webinar is more dramatic than anything else, but that sold it to me :)

Martina Cook

Fair enough Owen, I don’t expect everybody to write like I do, or think as I do, whatever makes you writing and happy with it, it’s your craft. That was a personal realisation and I’m not expecting everyone else to function as I do. If I can’t find the simple core of my story, I don’t feel I have a clear vision of it. But it’s my process, not what somebody else might need to write a story.

Bill Costantini

If you list a script on a site like InkTip....or are at a Pitchfest....and if your logline isn't appealing....why would someone want to read the synopsis or script, or pay attention and be interested in your pitch?

MAY THE HEAVENS BLESS THE VICTIMS AND THEIR FAMILIES/LOVED ONES OF THE LAS VEGAS SHOOTING TRAGEDY.

Martina Cook

Hi Bill, our thoughts and prayers with your city and fellow citizens in this terrible moment...hope you and your family are safe. Take care.

W Keith Sewell

Bill, that's the gist of it right there...
