Producing : International Co-Productions by Ben Barrick

International Co-Productions

I'm interested in hearing people's thoughts about international co-productions, especially for a small budget film. I'd love to hear how you found your co-production, what to look for in partners, and the challenges involved. Thanks!

I'm from Trinidad and Tobago and was for a short bit the chairman and acting CEO of our national film board/company with responsibilities for such co productions. I will concur with Willem that it can be difficult to navigate, for all the reasons outlined, but it's not impossible. We did some stuff but nothing as big as Pirates of the Caribbean. The reason i mention Pirates is i recently visited St Vincent where pirates was filmed, and because my old school teacher is married to the current prime minister of that country, i was able to find out that the Pirate's deal was hammered out because of sheer political will. I am no longer intimately involved with my country's film board/company but if anyone needs help navigating the challenges of a co production with my country (and theyre are many) I am willing to help and guide etc.

Timothy: I'd just love to go to Trinidad and Tobago. Now I just need to find a script for it.

Timothy Christopher Teemal

What kind of script are you looking for Ben?

Ben Barrick

I am in pre-prod for a political dark comedy right now. I'll be looking for the next smaller budget

project this winter.
