A Friendly Reminder: Do Your Research Before You Sign on the Dotted Line!

I guess it's kind of obvious but, still worth reminding ourselves of this necessity. We’ve all been there...

You finish a script that you’re passionate about and whole heartedly believe it’s ready for market.

As soon as someone in the industry shows interest, we are anxious to get the ball rolling.

It usually goes something like this:

A random producer contacts you saying that they’d love to hear more about the project you’re working on and offers to potentially represent you or attach to your project.

They like what they read... then, boom! They send you a contract that's filled with legal jargon that is not only hard to understand, it's very much NOT in your favor.

Don’t sign it. Do your research. Because like many of us I assume, we are not part of the Guild so they are not bound to their rates. They can offer us anything. It’s up to us to do our homework and decide whether or not it is a fair deal.
