Screenwriting : Selling a script without an agent. Can it be done? by Rod Seitz

Selling a script without an agent. Can it be done?

I can not find an agent that will take new screenwriters on.  Is it possible to sell your script yourself and if so can someone please pass how it is done along to me?

Craig D Griffiths

Yep.

I have one in Production in New York (I am in Australia) and we are looking at a new sale in Canada.

You have to realise it is a different market. Indie isn’t big budget, it isn’t, big studio. It is like a creative cottage industry.

If you have written a big budget film that needs a studio budget that will be much harder.

The short answer to your first question is yes

How you accomplish it can be daunting depending on your outlook, your location, your drive, ambition... First off research all the little complexities of the filmmaking industry to find where you feel most comfortable - Hollywood studio. national TV, indie film, cable tv... Connect with the folks in your chosen market and make acquaintances in that field. It really doesn't matter how you go about it - just do it! The industry ain't comin' for you - you gotta go get it!

If you want to work with top folks like Ridley Scott, Leo DiCaprio, Amy Pascal - the big dogs for big $ - you're gonna need a salesperson (rep).

What I find interesting, Graig, is that you prove (with many others) that 'distance' doesn't have to be a deal breaker.

Peter Roach

Craig gives us all hope.

I optioned a script to John Travolta's Manager/Producer without an Agent.

Matthew H Emma

I did. Granted, not to a humongous, well-known prod co or for a boatload of dough, but I still did.

So who here has sold a script for WGA scale money without a rep?

Craig D Griffiths

I do love me some Skype
