Introduce Yourself : What's up. by Nathan William

What's up.

Hey all, my name is Nathan William.

I've been a director for over a decade now and... I believe deeply in the power of smart, artful, storytelling... not for the sake of entertainment alone but to change people. I believe in movies that are bigger than themselves; in ideas that go beyond a two hour time frame. I believe in challenging ideas, not just once but beating on them repeatedly until they're sharp and refined and potent. I believe in collaborating with others who are true students of their craft to push an audience out of their comfort zone and toward something bigger. I believe in stories that don't scratch a director's ego but serve the audience foremost. I believe in redemption, and I believe in the raw realities of life that make the contrast between good and evil real.

I've stayed pretty quiet as a filmmaker for many years now, but I recently joined Stage32 to find others to collaborate with to do bigger things. I also strongly believe that even though there are a lot of exciting things to accomplish out there, the true reward of all of our hard work and creativity is the relationships we build along the way.

Hi Nathan, what do you want to see being explored in a story?

Nathan William

Hi Sefika, one of the things I'm really interested in is the idea of absolute truth. I think post-modernism is unlivable. I believe we all appeal to a standard of right and wrong even if we choose not to acknowledge it. For instance most would agree that self sacrifice is greater than self interest, but It's also common to hear ideas like "just do whatever makes you happy' which, at its core, doesn't actually lead anyone to happiness, but honestly creates anarchy for everyone. I know these are controversial ideas to many but I think we often too carelessly accept ideas that seem good at first but actually, when we really think about them, are not for our good at all. Now the kinds of stories are crafted to demonstrate ideas like these, I don't necessarily have specifics, but this is the heart behind what I want to use this medium for. Hope that answers your question. Thanks for asking!

Welcome! I've often found some filmmakers like to remain "quiet" throughout their journey. It's really so much better when you join others in your endeavors. Glad you decided to join the community!

Can the number 1 be greater than the number 1,000,000? Yes, if 1,000,001 people become united and ‘one’ then we have a winner! Oneness will always prevail. Nathan your post was very profound and touches on the callousness sometimes required to tell a great story. Another equation that gives the number 1 more importance is 1 > i, in this case i = ego

Hi, Nathan William! Welcome aboard! I couldn't agree more. I love when I leave a movie and can't stop thinking about it. When I can think of it after the two hours is up, I know it's moved me the way filmmaking should.
