Screenwriting : Sorkin Saturation by Philip Sedgwick

Sorkin Saturation

Back in January I heard a news commentator mention that THE WEST WING was now on HBO Max and could be binged. "Cool," thought I. That would be a noble investment of time.

Of course it was created by the one and only Aaron Sorkin. Many of the early episodes penned by him directly. And given that it was his baby, his imprinting persists throughout, regardless of the writing credit on the screen.

Last night we finished watching seven seasons of twenty-two episodes (plus two extras) of forty-three minutes each! Talk about plot point post-partum feelings today.

Realizing there's a heap of effort in pitching pilots and and creating series in the collective airwaves, this body of work stands to inspire us all. It's not necessary to take in all 154 episodes of the 6,622 minutes of brilliant content. Simply taking in a few episodes will inspire anyone looking to do it right.

The series is chock full of brilliantly nuanced dialogue and complicated layers of textured tension between the players. If nothing else, open up the osmosis filters and give it 90 minutes one fine writer blocked day to bolster whatever content you might be creating.

Highly recommended viewing. Consistently, at the end of each episode I found myself saying the same thing to the credit roll: "Wow!"

There's nothing like Sorkin saturation for a class in subconscious screenwriting!!

The series sprang from the 385 page draft for THE AMERICAN PRESIDENT Sorkin turned into Rob Reiner,

I agree. THE WEST WING is amazing. I've burned through the series twice over a course of years.

I also heartily recommend Sorkin's STUDIO 60 ON THE SUNSET STRIP. A little known, unforgettable gem whose characters, some of the best ever on TV, invade your psyche. Funny. Thought provoking. Dramatic.

I have the masterclass webinars and Sorkin goes deep into his writing process, what he believes works (for him).

Philip Sedgwick

Huge fan of STUDIO 60. Loved it! And his master class is also a treasure. Talk about raising the bar!

Richard Buzzell

Sorkin also wrote the un-watchable series "The Newsroom". What's up with that?

Tony S.

You didn't like it. That's what. :)

Philip Sedgwick

Perhaps a matter of taste... I liked THE NEWSROOM, SOCIAL NETWORK and though I've not seen THE TRIAL OF THE CHICAGO SEVEN, I thought the script was a most informative read... probably more so for someone who remembers the events.

John C. Nippolt

Good food for thought...the immensity of that theme!

Louisa Kendrick Burton

Studio 60 was one of my all time favorite shows. I was devastated when it was cancelled. Newsroom too! What's so great about now is that you could do a deep dive with the scripts and see the change from script to TV. Sorkin saturation, I love it.
