The best are paid for script formatting software programs - the free versions are offered only as an inducement. Most of them are pretty limited but a few aren't bad. You experiment and find what works best for you.
If you have MS Word, there is a free plug-in direct from Microsoft for that to make MS Word a screenwriting platform: https://templates.office.com/en-us/screenplay-tm02805802 (and you'll see other templates for creative endeavors as well). Good luck!
Oh, just FYI, just as Tim said above, I recommend Final Draft even though it's not free. It's $199.00 right now. If you can show you are a student, it's $99. If you can show you are a teacher, it's $99.00.
I used Final Draft but switched to KIT Scenarist. The program is quite simple besides being free and has basically all the features you can find in Final Draft. Plus it can open Final Draft files, i.e. you can import projects from there...
5. Fountain https://www.fountain.io You can use any editor and use fountain markup format to write script. Some also give free Fountain Editor too Cinemavision Fountain Editor cinemavision.com/ftneditor , MagicFountain https://aztorius.github.io/magicfountain/This website https://afterwriting.com/ can be used for fountain format too. You can download the package and use it from browser itself.

There's a discount for WriterDuet if you're a rockstar member on Script Revolution.
I've really liked Celtx.

I use writersduet cuz it's free. Final Draft is the industry standard so if you can afford it, go with it now.
Final Draft. Hands down. Industry standard. Most pros use it. No need to use anything else.
