I found this video of Guy Michelmore discussing his past experiences and giving a bit of advice. It resonated with me and I hope you all can take something away from this as well.
I love the points he made when talking about avoiding nostalgia.

This is the first time I've watched a video of his and he seems lovely and enthusiastic and I can imagine he is a great facilitator at Think Space! While I do agree on his point about working on the fundamentals, I don't 100% agree with him. You can write perfect melodies and not be Ed Sheeran...you need a lot more to line up to have the success of a Sheeran.
That's a good point, Arhynn.
I'm with Arynn, he seems really enthusiastic but I'm not sure I agree with him!
Not just on the melodies/Ed Sheeran thing, but also on the subject of imitation. I think imitation has a role to play for film composers. I started learning how to use VSTs because I was writing pieces in the style of Thomas Newman, a process I learnt loads from. And of course we spend half our life working alongside temp music. Although we should definitely interpret temp in our own way, we are kind of forced to be influenced by it and to some degree or another, imitate it. It shouldn't be a long term compulsion or all we do, but we do have to integrate it into our lives somehow or another.
wow this guy is great

I adore Guy, and I have taken some of the courses at Thinkspace.
