On Writing : Advice, Recommendations For Literary Press Agent by Drew Paige

Advice, Recommendations For Literary Press Agent

I have been searching for an agent to represent me to get myself out there to do television appearances about my memoir, podcasts (which I have actually had success finding on my own) it would be amazing to have someone to find me speaking engagements around the country to talk about mental health.

I am at a stand still due to not knowing where to look. There are so many creatives on Stage 32. If any of you have any advice, insight, recommendations about a literary agent or agency. I would be so grateful! I always find that when I ask in this forum I always have received amazing feedback in return.

I am so lucky to have this space to ask! Any suggestions I am open to thank you in advance for reading this post and Happy New Year to all!

Hey Drew, this is Karen from the Stage 32 team. I just wanted to let you know I moved your post from Anything Goes to Authoring & Playwriting, as it fits much better there. Let me know if you have any questions, and all the best to you!

I think it's a tough pill for a lot of people to swallow but the only way an agent will rep a writer is if they're marketable and they have a catalogue of work to boot. I see a lot of writers banking on one screenplay, cold calling/emailing into rep agencies and receiving no reply. But I've also seen the opposite. On top of that, I've seen a lot of writers going down the self-production route, writing micro-budget scripts, filming them and sending them out to competition.

Competitions and film festivals are an amazing opportunity for writers to measure their work up against the crowd, because it's a very competitive market. As far as advice goes, be patient, actively participate, continue chugging out those scripts and if you're lucky someone may see your potential and represent you as a writer. Until then, we're all on the same boat.

Frank thank you so much for your insight. I am an author not of screenplays but of my memoir. I was looking for representation to get my story out there. Thanks again I appreciate the connection and you taking the time to read my post.

You're very welcome! It's a pleasure to have you in my network. In your case I'd either self-publish or cold call/email some publishing websites. Stage 32 is more of a network for budding filmmakers and screenwriters. That's not to say we don't get authors working on book adaptations, or just authors in general. But executives (on here) are typically reading screenplays and repping screenwriters.

Daisy White actually has a lot of amazing blogs and posts in regard to authoring and adapting books to script format. I would suggest dropping her a message because she probably knows a lot more on the subject of publishing than I do.

I already am published with New Degree Press and my memoir is on Amazon/ Barnes and Noble. I am working with a screenwriter/actor to turn my memoir into a film. I have appeared on many podcasts already. I have done a lot of foot work on my own and have had success. I also have met so many wonderful creatives on this site. The advice I have received and the amount of directors/producers I have had zoom calls with have been amazing. I just was wanting input just to see what everyone thought. I was asking in terms of a press agent to help me get on talk shows, more podcasts and maybe a book tour. I can do this all on my own it would be amazing to have someone help with the leg work. Thank you for your amazing insight! It is helpful:)

Morag "Meg" Aitken That is a fantastic idea! A publicist sounds like a perfect route to go. I also from my editor received lit agents info and sent out five queries. We shall see how this goes. I always appreciate every ounce of input that I can get!!! Thank you not only for reading my book, for always reading my posts and your support means everything!

Daisy White I cannot thank you enough for all of the above information! I have accomplished a lot on my own so far I will take your advice!! Thanks again so helpful!

Hello. I am a publisher author with a good sales record with a small indi publisher. My work would lend beautifully to a cable series rather than a film. I have had bites from producers, via friend connection , and have tried reaching well known cable show runners but could not get past their agents. I have no more leads on Cable producers who might option my work. Can anyone advise me on the next action to take?
