Hey, does anyone know of a good way of getting playwriting and radio work? My ultimate ambition is to write for TV and film, but I have heard that radio and the theatre are a great way to break into the industry, so I am looking to get my foot in the door.
Don't know about UK but in US, it's not difficult to land a radio job if you don't expect much money and have a great voice (most don't use their normal talking voice btw - create a persona). If not your route - smaller stations are always looking for PSAs (public service announcements) to run on weekends and other times that they are short-staffed. What are you interested in? Record 15 and/or 30 second spots, and share with stations. You may or may not get paid for the PSAs but you'll get a foot in the door.
@Cara Rogers Thanks for the reply. I'm mostly interested in writing sci-fi, and my favourite radio plays are those written by Big Finish Productions, so I'd probably be looking to write some form of space saga or time travel adventure for a radio station. But there just seems to be so little information around for how to get your writing on the radio. I'll do as you suggest though and try sharing short recordings with stations.
Sean Bassett I would do the usual and dig around online. Get in touch with a few stations and potentially knock up an audition tape. There's lots of free radio DJ scripts you can download, not to mention news casts, add your songs in and find jingles.
@Phil Okay, thanks. That sounds like a good plan for sure.

I believe radio has a special place in the hearts of all of us. My suggestion is patient search for the appropriate words to capture each of your listeners. Read and speak in good tone each of the words, until you create captivating dialogues.
