Δ Second Tip: Know Your Characters [The WHO]
The people in a story are referred to as the characters. Before setting out to tell a story, you must know who it is about and what other persons come into it. When you identify who your characters are, naturally the main character will stand out.
The main character is the one person that if you take out of the equation, there will be no story left to tell. Identifying this character is among the first things you must do. Doing this will also single out the supporting characters, those who complement the story the most.
Do not bring in characters that are not needed just because they are affiliated with your main character. Include only those who are relevant to the story you’re telling. It is useless for you to include characters like a person’s college teacher when you’re telling a story about how they got divorced. If the college professor must be mentioned, he must have a defined role. Maybe he somehow has something to do with the divorce.
Anyone who must be part of the story must play a significant role.

This is a good way of developing a story.
The alternative is to find a question and then find a way of answering/examining it.
I find understanding the environment that shapes the person valuable.

The ability to tell stories is very important. I was always bad at it, no matter how hard I tried. Thanks for the advice Avraham Adzashoya. But one more important thing here is to get up from the couch and force yourself to write.
