Screenwriting : Networking in the Zoom era by Moe Lynch

Networking in the Zoom era

As screenwriters what are some of you doing to build relationships in the industry? Are you attending hundreds of parties and industry events to meet people or are you networking online?  What are some tips you use to make it feel like you're not on an island by yourself trying to get your work out there?

Doug Nelson

I can only speak to the last half century because that's what I know. The industry has always been based on personal connections - that's just the way it was; eye-ball to eye-ball and a handshake was a contract. You were only as good as your word. Obviously things are different nowadays. Whether it's for the better, or not, time will tell. This old guy withholds judgment at this time.

How's it going, Moe Lynch? I'm building relationships in the industry by getting to know people and supporting their projects. It's also important to maintain your relationships (stay in touch with people, check on people to see how they're doing, do favors for people, etc.).

I do all of my networking online. For now.

A tip to make it feel like you're not on an island by yourself: Be active at events or online. When you're around people and being involved, you feel like you're part of a community.

Hi Moe, for me it's always been an online thing. More so since some of us live outside the USA.

Moe, I actually DO network online...and I try to be as active as possible in platforms such as this one, Script Revolution, and Network ISA.

When I'm not writing my own stuff, I'm out there reading other people's scripts because I want to support what other writers are doing.

Whole lot of awesome stuff here on Stage 32 (and on Script Rev)...and I feel it needs to get produced.

So glad you're here on 32, Moe...all the VERY BEST to you!

Thanks for the tips.

Hi Moe! That's a great question. I have found the Zoom era to actually be a great time to connect online. I'd suggest being active in the lounges, reaching out and making connections here and starting conversations.

You're welcome, Moe Lynch.

The other day I commented something somewhere like "not much is happening online", but since 2020 I had a fair share of opportunities including, paid gig, paid script competition, just been offered script advisement on my conditions and a blog interview - all online...

...point is, you can talk this and that, have people's opinions on ya, but life is always there to disagree...

...it's a positive statement :))

Thanks, M LaVoie!
