Screenwriting : A very productive four months! by Phillip E. Hardy, "The Real Deal"

A very productive four months!

Since late May, I’ve been a busy screenwriter. I’ve signed five option agreements, which included two minor rewrites for my spec scripts, two very loose novel adaptions, and an adaption of a director’s treatment. All three of these adapted stories were action/thrillers, and the one I finished yesterday was a real challenge to achieve the story I wanted to tell. Though I had a detailed outline and synopsis, my characters and story took unexpected turns while crafting the screenplay. Since I’ve now written 50 features and teleplays in nearly every genre, my takeaway is with creative thinking, discipline, and tenacity, I’m confident I can meet any challenge I encounter during the process. And having written three screenplays and two rewrites since the late Spring, I feel terrific about my output.

Please share anything you like about your screenwriting experiences in 2022.

I hope they’ve been great.

Congrats! That's a lot going on...

While I am not a creative machine like you Phillip E. Hardy, "The Real Deal" & plugged into the Matrix (good for you, though!), I believe I have improved as a writer this year. So, at least I am trudging up the Sisyphus slope rather than have the boulder crush me. Did a screenwriting course near the start of the year. Completed rewrites for three of my scripts (that chalked 6 months off), tidied up a first draft of dystopian Sci-Fi script after leaving it alone for more half a year (still need to do the FINAL sweep) and close to the finalising a first draft for a (semi) contained horror. Have not decided if I should rewrite another one of my scripts or jump into something new once I clear the 2 current projects.

More specifically in relation to your post, it's good to remind everyone that writing/creating is supposed to be a positive experience.

Huge congratulations on all your success, Phillip E. Hardy, "The Real Deal"! That's a lot for such a short period of time! You're a factory! Haha

I've had a lot of great screenwriting experiences in 2022, but the top two were building a ton of industry relationships and getting writing jobs. My industry relationships and getting jobs have skyrocketed this year.

Maurice Vaughan

Congratulations on all your success, Mark Giacomin! It's great to hear you improved as a writer. That's one of the biggest successes as a writer.

Maurice:

Glad to hear you're having a good year. Thanks for sharing.

Maurice Vaughan

You're welcome, Phillip E. Hardy, "The Real Deal". And thanks, I appreciate it. Let's see where we are screenwriting wise at the end of the year. :)

Martin Reese

That’s great. Very inspirational.

That is so great to hear! I think the biggest achievement I have had this year was understanding how to work with feedback in a constructive way. Since then I have started to place in competitions left and right and it's a giant boost for my self-esteem. I am looking forward to getting more steeped in the art of screenwriting with classes and books I've gotten and upping my game to new levels this coming year. I hope to get something sold! My biggest weakness is presenting something before it's ready, it is my favorite mode of self-sabotage. Can't quite quit it.

Maria: Thanks for sharing. I've done the same thing with sharing too soon.

Maurice Vaughan

Congratulations on learning how to work with feedback in a constructive way, Maria! That's crucial for a writer, especially when working with a producer, director, production company, and studio! Congratulations on placing in competitions!

"My biggest weakness is presenting something before it's ready." I deal with the same thing. Sometimes it's hard to wait, but it's better to wait than send out something that's not ready, because you'll only get one chance with some producers, directors, etc. I keep reminding myself this. :)

Phillip "Uncle Phil' Hardy do you strictly do features or have you done television scripts? If mainly features, what made you choose that as your primary medium over the other?

Jim Boston

Phillip and Maurice, congratulations on the success you're both enjoying here in 2022!

Me, I'm getting more of a foot in the door...if only because of being able to pitch "Fine Tooth Comb" to Tessa Shaffer and submitting "Intervention!" to Interdependent Studios for consideration.

May you (and the rest of us on Stage 32) enjoy more of the VERY BEST!

Phillip E. Hardy, "The Real Deal"

James: Thanks!

Maurice Vaughan

Thanks, Jim. Congratulations on all your success, and I hope Tessa Shaffer and Interdependent Studios buy your scripts/produce them!

Maurice Vaughan

Congratulations on getting hired to rewrite the script, Dan!

Maurice Vaughan

You're welcome, Dan.

Jim Boston
