Screenwriting : Writing in other formats by Jamie Isolini

Writing in other formats

General question and needing some advice. Finished writing a feature length script, and while starting to proofread, edit, and revise the script i had a though of "This may be better as a novel." Was wondering if anybody had similar thoughts and how you made a decision because I can see my script as a feature length film, and I can also see it as a trilogy book series. The script is very sci-fi/corrupt government and I can also see it being a YA fictional trilogy series. If anybody has had a similar experience i would love to hear how you either switched formats and what you went through to make that decision. Hopefully this is also in the correct lounge.

I have many colleagues and friends who have decided to turn their screenplays into novels over the last few years. Also know quite a few who have gone the podcast route as proof of concept/build an audience/create existing IP.

I usually go a different route, Jamie Isolini. I turn short scripts into feature scripts, TV shows, etc. "Was wondering if anybody had similar thoughts and how you made a decision." I look at a short script and make sure there's enough story for a feature script, show, etc. Another thing I do is decide which format would be best for the story. A feature? A TV show? A web-series? A podcast? Etc. You can do these things for turning a feature script into a novel also.

Yes! What Maurice Vaughan said. Check out Mortal Enemy - Legends of Grim #1 by Nicholas Ryan Howard on Spotify. The bulk of audiences are found digitally. YouTube and Patreon are houses for many an independent show, and there are also opportunities to use these platforms to monetize. YouTube isn't as easy without subscriptions, but you can set privacy and sell off a website. Lots of options and formats out there.

Jamie Isolini

thanks for the opinions. especially Maurice i honestly don't know why i didn't think of a web series. when i read that i was like "oh that opens some options."

Maurice Vaughan

You're welcome, Jamie Isolini. I try to do that with all of my ideas. "Will this be a better TV series?" "Will this be a better web-series?" Etc. Sometimes I decide on doing two formats. Example: Feature script and TV series.
