Hi all. Only recently joined the site and have started watching the webinar re TV dramatic writing which is very good. I recently submitted a TV series pitch to a US production company which they loved and wanted to produce as a podcast with a view to then shop it around to produce as a TV series. The catch: I pay the production costs of the podcast, which of course is in the several thousand dollars ball park.
Was interested in getting the views of more experienced writers on this. Shouldn't they pay the production costs if they want to produce it?

If they want it they should pay for it or you control everything and why do you need them?

Thanks Warren. Appreciate the response. Yeah that's what I figured in my gut too.

It's like those agents that make their talent use their photographer and charge them for photos and even to charge the actor to rep them.

do you need a portfolio or money? my opinion is, if you need a portfolio and you have money, make a podcast.

Ahem.... if you are paying the costs, WHO WOULDN'T BE INTERESTED IN DOING IT? This is not a producer, this is a production SERVICES company.

Hi Dylan, my suggestion would be to find some actors, a sound engineer to make the podcast and produce it yourself - after all, what is being suggested is for you to record something as a proof of concept and I see no need to self fund thousands of dollars to make something happen when there is no guarantee it will go forward. During Lockdown, I wrote a prequel to my stage play and the actors, myself and a recordist made a couple of episodes to put online including this short - https://wdaf.co.uk/waiting-for-peter/
