I am in pre-production for a short film at the moment - I have gone the festival route previously, but I would love to know your thoughts on what is best to do with a short film - Handy to know before I film it! I would like to get funding for a feature film - What would you suggest?

If the short is a proof of concept for your feature, you can reach out to productions companies you think would be a good fit for the feature and ask to send them the short (or include a link). That said, having some kind of laurels/awards can help get their interest. For example, say you're writing a horror feature, and this is a horror short, you would want to focus on festivals that are prestigious in that genre. Something like Screamfest. So be targeted with your approach, both with the festivals and the production companies you query.

All of mine went through a festival circuit...I haven't got any deals on streaming, but marketing's unfortunately my weak side...

My college classmate spent $15,000+ directing a short movie as an audition reel for paid jobs... and he did get a job, which lead to DGA membership, which lead to directing 15+ years for studio feature films and emmy Tv shows.... And the short movie that started his career is somewhere in a closet gathering dust.

A great script for your feature, with coverage (good options on S32), is typically the best way to get a feature off the ground, even with a festival recognized short. Package the script with your short(s) into a solid pitch deck.
