Screenwriting software

I'm an author with ten published novels under my belt. I'd like to delve into screenwriting. I know most would recommend FinalDraft, but that's a little expensive for me right now. Is there any less costly software that someone could recommend? Thanks.

Lee Eide

DubScript is a very good (free) software that I presently use.

Maurice Vaughan

Hi, Carol. WriterDuet doesn't cost much each month. www.writerduet.com

Christiane Lange

I use Arc Studio Pro, which I came across through ISA. The annual subscription is around $100, I think, and there is a free version (limited to 2 screenplays), so you can try it out without investing money.

Clive Martin

Further to earlier comment, WriterDuet also has a Free option, for up to 3 scripts - which you can edit, save, download. But you can’t invite contributors. As a footnote, routinely download your work for safety.

Hi Carol, I'm an author like yourself and just getting started. I came across FadeIn and find it intuitive and easy to use. Moreover the free version gets you everything you need. As per earlier comments, save regularly but seems very trustworthy thus far.

Great suggestions. Thanks so much! I figure I'll start out with a less expensive software, and if things go well, I'll upgrade to a better one. Thanks again.

Maurice Vaughan

You're welcome, Carol Preflatish.

Go with WriterDuet, especially if you have a Chromebook (Final Draft is incompatible with Chrome). WD is easy to use and inexpensive, plus its customer service is superb.

Marietta Birbili

I use scenarist!

Philip Sedgwick

Fade In Pro is solid, competent, reasonably priced and you get to keep your scripts on your machine. My partner uses it and it is great!

Ryu Reeves

Absolutely I would recommend writerduet 1000%. I loved using that and to be honest I kinda miss it! It's free but you have the option to pay monthly for extra features, but if you're just writing a script it's free!

Stephanie Munch

I use Writerduet, at the beginning for the free scripts but I really like it

Celtx used to be free and was good for basic formatting. I think it’s still around.
