i’m doing two scenes from my screenplay, RED CAR. i’ve got a producer, got the money. i have a hair and makeup artist, friend. i have a costume artist friend. i’ll be the set designer along with my hair and makeup guy. i’ll be the director. the storyboard is done.

the producer will do the camera work and provide actors. sound and lighting are still needed. could my make-up guy do the lighting? he has experience in lights with photography. my costume guy could do the sound?

are these two tasks doable you think, by first timers on a movie set? versus hiring out the two positions?

i haven’t done editing but i’m really looking forward to it! the producer will teach me.

any advice would be welcome.

Hey Rex Basswood! I would not have a beginner do the sound (personally), I can see how the MUA who have enough knowledge to get at least theatrical or quality lighting (though that depends on their experience with photography). I remember an interview with the team behind 'Blue Valentine,' and they talked about how they could go a little grungier and natural with the lighting but the sound HAD to be good because that's what they felt separated quality projects from lesser quality ones. And even with "mumblecore" films, you'll notice that visually it might by grungey and shakey, and the dialogue is very natural, but the sound recording itself is still strong. This is all personal opinion though, I would throw this question the filmmaking lounge, I bet your fellow filmmakers would have great advice!

ALSO, editing is such a specializes form of storytelling, definitely check out some of our great courses on editing. There's a lot of great experience in there!
