Screenwriting : Structure question by Brian K

Structure question

Hi. I have a 115 page script. Acts 1, 2a & 2b are all roughly 32-33 pages meaning my mid-point is at 65/115 and Act 3 is 20 pages. Just wondering if this is still acceptable to producers or if it's a strict no-no.

Thomas Moore

Sorry, I don't know, but I personally don't think it should be an issue, sometimes the script just ends up like that and it's still good.

Craig D Griffiths

Does the story make sense. Does the changes, plot points and character actions happen with a well metered pace?

Then it is all good. The pages numbers are unimportant. If you write in Australia we use A4 which means it will be happening on different pages than people using Letter US.

Think in terms of story not page numbers. Page numbers are not really structure.

Hey Brian! Those page guides that are just that - guides! Most movies if you think about it have really short acts. The third act of THE HANGOVER is technically from them finding their friend on the roof to the end - it's like 15 minutes or less and the way they find him is completely random. Now that movie is 10+ years old at this point, but it's an easy example. So long as the story flows well from one sequence to the next, and it sounds like your first half moves pretty traditionally, then I think you're okay. But if you'd like to get a professional's opinion, shoot me an email at success@stage32.com and I can make some recommendations

Dan Guardino

The three acts are just the industry standard so do whatever you or your story dictates.
