Screenwriting Software

Hi!  Can anyone make recommendations for screenwriting software?  Especially ones that are user-friendly and are compatible with Mac OS. Thanks!

Mark Garbett

Final Draft is the industry standard, and that's what I'd recommend. There are cheaper options like Fade In which is solid, and I believe Celtx has a free version but not sure if it's available with Mac. Lots of others available that I haven't tried but Final Draft is what most pros use.

Thank you for your input!

Thanks! I haven't heard of this one.

Celtx is good for starting out but software such as Final Draft and Scriviner have lots of additional functionality such as "corkboards" for planning and structure.

Anthony Murphy

I've tried most and Final Draft is the industry standard. Final Draft is having a Summer sale with a 30% off at $174.99 for FD 12: https://store.finaldraft.com/final-draft-12.html?utm_term=final%20draft%2012&utm_campaign=SBM+%7C+US+Search+%7C+Full&utm_source=adwords&utm_medium=ppc&hsa_tgt=kwd-546833848450&hsa_grp=143183209666&hsa_src=g&hsa_net=adwords&hsa_mt=b&hsa_ver=3&hsa_ad=666091534538&hsa_acc=7877895225&hsa_kw=final%20draft%2012&hsa_cam=18947725391&gad=1&gclid=Cj0KCQjw2eilBhCCARIsAG0Pf8sGiCC0eehkkR3X9-Otq72LccJJofwr4MVByu5ZK0StzHEgiPd6ZO8aAgkMEALw_wcB

Thank you both!I will check out Celtx. And thanks for the Final Draft link!

Randy Riddle

I tried Celtx, but you might quickly outgrow it. I've found Final Draft to have the most functionality when I'm working on a script - it's easy to rearrange scenes, get reports on characters to figure out inconsistencies through your script, etc. They also offer an app with basic functionality that lets you go between working on your laptop/desktop or your tablet. I keep an eye out for sales on Final Draft or take advantage of their upgrade offers from one version to the next.

Tasha McLemore

I use Arc and it is less expensive than Final Draft.

Anthony Murphy

Randy Riddle I agree, Randy. I tried MMSW too, and IMO nothing equals FD. I was using FD6 until last spring when FD offered upgrades to FD12 for just $75, and it's wonderful, especially the outlining.

Anthony Murphy

Abeeha Alam Abeeha, I just started a post in the Screenwriting Lounge about the FD summer sale with a live link to the $174.99 price if you want to check it out.

B A Mason

I recommend Fade In - it doesn't have all the bugs, registration hang-ups, or high price that Final Draft does. Plus, it doesn't charge you to upgrade each new version, comes packed with all the same features Final Draft does, and it replicates the Final Draft template so you can produce a Final Draft script but without any of the headaches.

Anthony Murphy

@BA Mason I've read really good reviews on Fade In. If I hadn't had an older version of FD that allowed a $75 upgrade and was looking for a new screenwriting software, Fade In would be my pick. It's only like $79 too.

Anthony Murphy

Abeeha Alam BA Mason suggested Fade In, which has great reviews and is much more affordable than even an on sale FD, and as he explains above, creates a FD script. Here's a link:
