Are you writing your script for yourself and passion? Or are you writing your script to sell? Dive into the debate in this lounge post!

The header you see above was sent to me via direct email. It posed a question with a link, however - - - the link didn't take to the place I would directly respond to the wonderfully framed query. And so, after searching a bit I landed here to respond. I hope I'm welcomed to do so.

As for the 'reason why' I write in all the genres that I do:

I do so 'for all of you!' I rarely-if-ever, do anything just for myself or for my pleasure or with only myself in mind. (Hmm-- only myself-- is that a repetitive?) Smiles!

At present I have a plethora of stories to be told, screenplays, plays, TV Movies, TV Series, Feature as-well short films for the Big Screen. They are in essence, "BACKING UP or PILING UP" if you will. But "Why" one might ask!...'?'

I've been painstakingly trying to put the finishing touches on a 5+ year project of mine. That project has consumed my every waking moments, leaving me with (In the literal sense of the words---) No Time for anything else to get on the pages. (You may not imagine the sheer amount of OUTLINES I have stacked up on every surface of my home! LOL!) I Laugh! here, but in truth, tis not truly funny at all. I am (For a lack of better more perhaps descriptive words) 'OVERWHELMED.'

Nonetheless, as they say in the Show Biz, "The SHOW MUST GO ON!" Another wonderful quote from a famous wise person, "Into the Breech!" As so to I shall hence! :--))

I am a human being with UNMATCHED as-well UNEQUALLED PASSION and I have been this way since childhood IN ALL that I do for and with others as-well myself.

I do not write with thee almighty $$$$$$ in mind. That doesn't exist within me, never has and I hope it never does. It truly CAN BE EVIL in every sense of the words.

I do not write for Fame, or Fortune, Prestige, Power or Position.

I don't write with underlying devious reasoning. That's just NOT my WAY!

WHEN I write, I write TO communicate with others in my life. I LOVE lettering by hand. Tis a LOST ART as-well BLESSING between us human beings.

I also write FOR a more Human-to-Human connection... a simple word perhaps--- to 'RELATE.'

I feel that IF whatever we do in our fields in life, we are focused on relating on our humanitiies level... we shall succeed via the feelings of 'connection.' And THAT IS my reasoning for writing and sharing with all of you and countless others.

I hope I have answered the questions posed to me in that email from the Stage.

Always a pleasure!

By the way, IF you have not watched the Webinar with Elisabeth Rohm and Sam hosting on 'Acting & Directing', you're seriously missing out. It was a GREAT session. One that I feel strongly ALL Actors as-well Directors and even Producers can gain huge insights from! Just listen to her talk/share! One word suits--- 'WoW!"

Cheers mates! Happy Writing!

Kindly always, Sir Nicholas In Seattle

As Walter White once said: "I did it for me." Nothing else needs to be said here.

And Happy Birthday to your second eldest daughter too!

I write scripts for fun sometimes, @Nicholas In Seattle, but I mainly write scripts to sell them. And I want my scripts to entertain people and inspire some kind of change in them. Happy Birthday to your daughter! :D

Nicholas In Seattle For myself, for passion or to sell is, it seems to me, full of false choices. Surely, to start with I write for me, to try and craft a story that is full of wonder, mystery and alarm. This is all stirred by the passion I have for writing and once it's done, I look for partners to help bring it into reality. After all, I want others to see it.

Nick Waters

Cool topic Nicholas In Seattle . For me, it's all the above.

I have to “love” something to do a great job. If I write something great, it will sell (I hope). If someone offers me work, and I think I can be great, I’ll take it.

But I write things for me, that I know has an audience, therefore may sell.

Assuming I am not the only person in world who is interested in the same things as I am, I write the kind of stories I'd like to read, scripts I'd like to see on the screen. My facebook friends taught me that. There are communities with varied interests ( I belong to a U-boat group, English history, Norse history, war history, Art Deco, etc.) and each group provides information about events, people, backstories ... that provide grist for the mill of storytelling. Ingredients are all around, it's the different ways to combine them that may or may not "sell." I believe in the dictum, you can't please all the people all the time. One thing I know: I'm not writing a garlic story because I hate garlic.

Hey Everyone, thanks so much for your comments and sharing your views, thoughts and sentiments on this subjective. It's wonderful to read what others have in mind when and for what reason they have chosen to write and share their stories. I enjoyed every comment left here, even the shortest one @Nick Waters ... Ahem! ahahah Cheers with a wink mates! Happy Writing! Always kindly, Sir Nicholas In Seattle 9.1.2023 8:11pm Ack I'm late by 11 minutes! Darn '11's' anyhow! :--)) Adieu...

Always. Even when money's included...you see, most people don't realize what are they being paid for on them low enthusiastic day jobs...it's for your time...personal time. You give 8-10 hours of your life each day and receive paycheck. Anything beyond that (like doing an actual work) is on a bonus scale...

But, entertainment business is not like that. You have actually produce something you've been paid for, be it acting, writing, directing, etc...and to do that, yes you goddamned need a spark of passion at least. So you actually have to love what you do. No other way...

Maurice Vaughan

You're welcome, Nicholas In Seattle. When I write scripts for fun, it's mainly short scripts and scenes. Sometimes I'll use them for writing samples.
