Introduce Yourself : Re-introducing myself by Andrew John Rainnie

Re-introducing myself

Hello fellow creatives,

My name is Andrew, I'm a writer and director from Scotland. I have been a member of Stage 32 for a long time, but I've never really used it as a social media platform. Now, with the rapid demise of Twitter/X, I thought I'd break free from doomscrolling and say hello again, and see where it might lead.

At the moment I work as a freelance script reader, while also working on my own projects. I have credits in two shorts coming to festivals (hopefully) in 2024 - one is based on a script I wrote, the other is an animation that I directed and produced via Kickstarter.

In the past, I've had a couple of feature films optioned but never produced. I also set up my own film company to make films for charities and charitable causes. However, I shut this down during the pandemic as the opportunities were no longer there.

Away from work, I am a massive video game nerd, or I try to be when I have the time! Being Scottish, I love good craft beer and good whisky. My ideal weekend is getting lost in the Scottish wilderness with my dog then coming home to a hearty stout!

So what am I looking for from Stage 32? The same as everyone else I guess - clients, collaborations, connections - all the C's! I like to help people develop stories and get to the heart of their scripts.

I'm looking forward to being more active on here and speaking with more of you!

Cheers,

Andrew

Great to meet you, Andrew John Rainnie. I like the hat. I used to play Kirby on Game Boy. I think it was regular Game Boy.

Great post and I like all the C's.

I’m so glad you posted a message to us. This is a great place to meet others and grow.

Ahoy! I'm interested in those C's as well! I live way over on the East Coast of the US, where I make short films, and write features. I'm also a huge nintendo fan! HUGE! Welcome! What sort of stories do you like to tell? I like all sorts of stuff, but gravitate toward dark, slippery ideas most.

Andrew John Rainnie

Hi David. Yeah I play my Switch when I can (juggling work and a baby!)

What sort of stories do I tell? I don't really know how to define it. I'm currently writing the third book in my fantasy trilogy, Spirits of Vengeance, which in one sense is an epic fantasy series (gods, magic, elves, assassins etc.) but on the other hand, it is a very intimate story about death and loss. I think that's why I decided to make my next book series, tentatively titled Old Crows, a fun, more adult steampunk-ish romp!

In terms of screenwriting - like you, I tend to gravitate towards the dark. Many of my recent ideas have been born from a frustration that led to the 'What if...' inspiration... e.g. What if a group of boys decide to beat up an old man, who turned out to be a former hitman?

I had an idea today for an ultra-low-budget film, essentially a 90-minute interrogation that explores different forms of psychological torture.

To balance that, I'm also writing a film that I see as a Ghibli-style animation :-)

David Joshua Gaestel

Whoa, that's up and down the spectrum of emotion! Is there anywhere I could check out a film you wrote?

Mark Garbett

Cool intro Andrew, Spirits of Vengeance sounds fun. Since you're already involved in crowd funding I'd think you'd have a good shot at raising enough for your interrogation idea.

Am I jealous of that hat? A little, maybe.

Hi David, here are a couple:

The Collector - based on a short story by Jonathan Lethem - probably my best work https://vimeo.com/40686500

Water Rats - https://youtu.be/BWDnLHFt7IE?si=Lt5QHiuA5kz_sy9O - this is the film we crowdfunded - I'm proud of this one as well, but we had some issues before and during production that impacted it. Lots of lessons learned.

Cheers,

Andrew
