The idea of doing something like "The Wall" in Spanish would be great. It is just taking any streaming platform from a screen and taking it to a live recital... just imagine it, a recital that begins with Netflix Presents.... something different, history in cinema, history in music... I dont know how
A challenge that I'm hearing from a lot of producers is deferred fees on independent productions. Often times producers will work for free from the development phase all the way until the film gets distributed. Then, and only then, do they get their producer fee. That's why having a solid CAMA account in place is key to ensure that you get paid for your hard work. Chris Moore tried to create an independent Producers Union to ensure fair wages and I know they just met the other week on that, as well.
In addition, my other challenge as a producer is that acting talent's value in foreign presales has dropped significantly. I'm producing a feature film right now where one actor was easily work $2-$3M overseas and after Cannes the rate is coming back around $1M. Have to ride this wave right now and either make the film for less or go into high budget $15M+ with mini studio support.
There’s only so much of it in the day, and there is no longer a luxury of being on one project at a time.
It’s not a delegation issue because at the end of the day a true working producer knows they are responsible and they have to be the calm adult in the room when something comes up.
And things come up everyday — no matter how much you plan.
I am actively in production on 5 projects right now and no matter how clearly I lay out the plan, I inevitably have to babysit it, repeat myself, and do damage control when someone drops the ball or something unforeseen pops up.
Yes, that’s the job, but because the industry is so upside down right now, it necessitates having to take on more and not less.
And there’s not enough time.
So, Mr. Mirch, can you turn things right side around so we can not be stretched so thin?
Securing equity investment is harder than ever. And then there's the perennial problem of trying of attach name talent before the project is financed while investors won't commit until they know the lead cast.
