It's a natural progression in the grand scheme of things. Other production companies have been doing it for decades. It's a wonder Netflix hasn't done it sooner.

Netflix stocks are booming, but they're missing a physical studio lot or owning movie theaters.

I do believe Netflix will buy Disney Studios by 2025.

Franchising is a real mixed bag IMO. On the surface, or at least for the execs and the accountants, it seems like low-hanging fruit. Take a popular Idea and repeat it to get the same results... however it's pretty obvious from the recent car-crash of Marvel movies, the never-ending dross that has been DC and even the recent GhostBusters that a decent Franchise requires just as much if not more investment in story craft. The audiences expectations are elevated over original IP and they are less forgiving. The rules or lore of the franchise have been established so everything has to fit within that or its just not goign to be the same. Finally, for me, the biggest worry for those of us who love to write original ideas is that for the next 10 years Netflix is goign to focus on milking what it has until its run dry and stop investing in new ideas and new work.

Would be kinda cool. They have some really strong properties in their catalogue, as long as they don't abandon the auteurs altogether and put actual resources behind them, I believe they can be good. Money Heist is another excellent example from them.
