Introduce Yourself : Hello from Spain! by Thomas Yazar

Thomas Yazar

Hello from Spain!

I'm thrilled and a lil bit intimidated to join that thriving community. I'm French, 43, living in Spain. I'm wrapping up my third screenplay, and I'm eager to see how it fares in upcoming festivals and contests. Do you think that's a valid way to shine a light on my projects ? I'm here to connect with fellow screenwriters, share insights, and learn from this talented group.

Matthew Kelcourse

I think the more eyes on your work, the better :-)

Wayne Jarman

Welcome, Thomas. Wishing you all the best!

António Monfort

Welcome Thomas I wish you good lucky

Hi Thomas. I am kind of in the same boat as you, i.e. written three screenplays and just recently entered contests. I have talked to a few people about the potential benefit of competitions and the opinions run the gamut (shocking I know). If you have some disposable income (especially if you want feedback from readers) my view is "Why not?" Even if placing or winning doesn't catapult you to screenwriting stardom it could earn you some instant bonafides when trying to pitch/sell your scripts. My sister, who co-wrote a script which was produced, even recommended competitions, BUT that's not how she got her movie made! My goal now is to make sure my works are as good as possible before entering the fray again (still awaiting results of one competition). If you haven't already one thing I would do is look at the competition sites and look at the loglines/scripts of previous placers/winners.

Thomas Yazar

Thanks for the advice and encouraging words! It's indeed tough to find worthwhile competitions. A lot of the sites on FilmFreeway have a very scammy vibe... And the others are... A bit pricey. It's all about having a good filter, i guess

Great to meet you, Thomas Yazar. I think festivals and contests are valid ways to shine a light on your projects. The most helpful festivals and contests are the ones that set you up with meetings with industry pros that'll advance your career, like Stage 32's contests (www.stage32.com/scriptservices/contests). You could also shine a light on your projects by posting them on your Stage 32 profile for producers, directors, etc. to see.

Matthew Parvin

Welcome Thomas! Nice to meet you. Glad you're here.

Pat Alexander

Hey Thomas Yazar good to hear from you! What genre of scripts do you like to write?

Thomas Yazar

I'm drawn to scripts which have a challenging dilemma at the core of it, forcing the characters towards an impossible/life-changing choice.

António Monfort
