My wife and I got to actually go to a movie this weekend, unencumbered by our tiny, adorable overlord (thanks Grandma) and got to see Deadpool and Wolverine. REceiepts are in and they did just shy of half a billion globally in the opening weekend. It was the most fun I have had at the movies in a long time, it was a firehose of fan service, and it never would have happened if two "unknown individuals" hadn't defied the powers that be at Fox and released the POC footage to the internet. Just a friendly reminder that no one knows your vision better than you. https://deadline.com/2024/07/deadpool-wolverine-box-office-records-12360...

Almost half a billion on opening weekend! For an R-rated movie! You're right, Tom Lapke. The weekend success of Deadpool and Wolverine does prove rules are made for breaking. One reason I think the movie made so much is the pairing of Deadpool and Wolverine. They're so funny together! They're like superhero buddy cops. I think another reason the movie made so much is the fun, creative marketing.

Didn't know it was opened Tom Lapke,. Checked the schedules and supposed to go see it Thursday. Thanks!

So it's rated "R", yes, but certainly demonstrates the power of new concepts! In other words, there is much to explore in the world of creativity. Sensitivities yes, but amazingly undeniable!

I finally got to go see it last night and it was awesome! As a comic book fan who grew up with the Fox-era superhero movies, I thought it was a tremendous sendoff. I had so much fun!!

Got a chance to see it Friday! In no doubt explosive with action, humor, creativeness and more. I saw people who just wanted to forget the stress of life and have fun, this is where we challenge ourselves and needs be mindful of this!

Found it tad tiresome and sophomoric. Not much to recommend.
Ragging on Fox especially breaking the fourth wall to "crack" the lens. The self-reflexive Disney material.
The prevalent homoerotic content was especially off putting: stabbing enemy's groins; simulating male anal intercourse; Deadpool's longing looks at Wolverine's physique; dick jokes. In sum, it's a bit homophobic.
The twist reincarnating Wolverine through time travel was a cheap device.

E Langley, thank you for sharing your opinions! The character Deadpool is pansexual and is known to make a LOT of jokes both visually and verbally that address his open sexual fluidity. So I believe the material was meant to be homoerotic, not homophobic at all.
It's interesting that you felt that they were ragging on Fox. A lot of people portrayed the film as a love letter to the Fox-era, not ragging on it. I mean, Deadpool pokes fun at everything and isn't afraid to pick at the silliness of Fox AND Disney, so he does have some jokes at Fox's expense but he also makes fun of the MCU and people being tired of the multiverse. But overall, it seemed like the intent was to acknowledge these characters and the movies that Fox made and allow them a chance to say goodbye and have a final win.

The movie continues to smash the box office. This interview with the director, Shawn Levy, is worth sharing in this discussion: https://variety.com/2024/film/news/shawn-levy-deadpool-and-wolverine-spo...

Came to say something similar to Ashley's reply. I thought it stayed pretty true to the source material, so I was cool with it.
So happy to be punished for not understanding the film. IN CAPS.
That and unwanted commentary on my (assumed) politics.
Equally happy oppositional viewpoints are respected here.

My use of caps was not meant to be negative, E Langley. Apologies if it was perceived that way. I have a bad habit of doing that when I’m excited and enthusiastically geeking out. I honestly appreciated your opinions. I was simply trying to join in on the conversation and add additional context as a comic book reader who knows the character well. I thought it was interesting that you found the jokes made at Fox to be more pointedly ragging on the studio, because I hadn’t heard that opinion shared much. Thats why I was mentioning the way that a lot of content creators and reviewers that I follow have been interpreting the material differently, as a love letter of sorts. Your viewpoints are absolutely respected and I am glad that you shared the fact that the movie was a miss for you. It’s just as important to know what doesn’t work for some people as it is to know what people enjoy.

Sam Sokolow I saw some interviews with Shawn Levy for Stranger Things, and I thought he came across as a very caring man, for both the talent on the production as well as the story. A cool dude, if ever there was one.

He's one of my favorite directors, Geoff Hall! I absolutely love his films.
