I'd love to start understanding the world of composing and music for movies and films. Could you suggest some resources? And I’d love to hear from any composers here—what’s a common mistake new filmmakers make when working with a composer?

I would think filmmakers / producers make mistakes using the wrong composer.
The vibe / trust has to be there also.
I’ve liked On the Track book for reference- it’s like
$79 though has great references as well as actual examples and how to write with rhythm and Melody - two chapters in the book.

Aiden Barr From what I've seen, and I agree with Kerry, that the vision and vibe have to be aligned. A filmmaker may have a completely different concept, and while you can give a composer some direction of what you are looking for, the composer still has to be allowed some creative license during the process. What can be amazing about this though is that if both are open to that creativity, something completely new can be made that the filmmaker might not have even imagined.

yeah, trust is important if director is far away from music, because the only way director can insist for some changes in composition is only with strong background of understanding of music, its structure and dramaturgy

Hi, Aiden. As a composer with over 24 years in the film industry, the most common mistake from starting filmmakers is to believe they know more than the experienced composer they hired! :)

Thank you so much Kerry Kennard Kat Spencer Henry Mashtots for sharing. I will check out the On the Track book as I improve my understanding of your world, and how you elevate the experience to a level that I don't have a vocabulary for.

You’re welcome, Kat Spencer !
There’s a few other books - the
Berklee Film music boon is good and has nice stories from composers as well as good primer on this field.
Remember Yoda’s famous words - which I need to heed at Times -
No try, only do - hmm ;-)
