Screenwriting : What should I ask Patton Oswalt? by Heather Kennedy

What should I ask Patton Oswalt?

So, I might be at a screening of "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty" tomorrow night with a live Q&A with Patton Oswalt. I'm trying to come up with a good question to ask as an aspiring screenwriter. Maybe something along the lines of, "As an actor, is there anything you wish you saw more of in the scripts you're getting?" Any other ideas?

James David Sullivan

How do you feel about the director making changes in your script? That ought to get a lively response!

James David Sullivan

Heather, please let us know which questions you chose and what his responses were. It will be interested in finding out!

Pierre Langenegger

How about a question that crosses from writing into acting since he does both?

James David Sullivan

Not a bad idea. Example: "How do you feel when an actor totally misinterprets one or more of your lines?"

Heather Kennedy

I wound up asking him the question I posted above. His response was that so much today is just a retelling of the same stories over and over and over again. He wants to see stories about people or segments of society that haven't had a light shown on them yet. He gave "Repo Men" as an example. He told me to write MY "Repo Man." He didn't talk much about his writing. He said that choosing roles now depends a lot on geography. He has a four-year old daughter and isn't interested in leaving LA for long periods of time. He thinks TV today is what movies used to be and mentioned Orphan Black and Orange is the New Black as favorite shows. And some others I don't remember. It was a fun night. I highly recommend the movie. It's sweet and visually gorgeous. The screening was in his hometown, so I wound up sitting directly behind him and his parents, who are adorable. He's pretty jealous that a town that was in the country when he was growing up there now has an Alamo Drafthouse. :)
