Hello everybody! I recently decided to pursue a career in film acting. Acting has always been a passion of mine, and I did years of it up until I was 15, and have just started taking an acting class since it's been so long! I'm planning on moving to LA in a few months, and was wondering if anybody has any words of advice for me? I feel like there is so much that goes into an acting career, and I can't wait! At the same time, it's a little daunting. Anybody else in a similar boat as me? Or a different boat, doesn't matter! Either way, I'm looking forward to connecting with you :)

One piece of advice I've heard from different sources: Be a big fish in a small pond before diving into the big pond. Do well where you are first, then think about making the big move. Done that? Then listen to this CD's advice, and learn everything you can (I'm still scratching the surface myself): http://bonniegillespie.com/blog/how-can-i-prep-for-my-move-to-la/ I'm no expert, but I learn from those who are. Good luck and best wishes to you.

Yes, I agree. I also started in the Bay area and all the LA cd's I met have said it's great to get your experience in a smaller market. It gives you the ability to do a lot of work, build up your resume, and get a bunch of experience so that when you start in LA you're already ahead of the game. I can also highly recommend the Bay Area Acting studio for acting classes. The founder studied with Sandy Meisner, so they do the Meisner technique. It's where I've gotten my training and I can't say enough good things about it.
You will get lots of guidance and support here. Welcome.
I agree with Ayelette! Small pond first, then big pond :)

As an Actor you are working on your brand and name. Take your acting classes, get some professional head shots and submit yourself for short films. You need the experience and credits to build your resume.

Stay non-union as long as you can.

Some great tips here, so I'll take a different angle. Be patient, don't rush things. You're just starting out. Be a sponge. Find a group of supportive artists and learn from them. Stay positive. Always. Remember that you'll hear "No" much, much more than you'll hear "Yes". But, that one "Yes" is right around the corner if you work your ass off and network. Relish in the small victories. A compliment on your performance in class. Your attitude. Anything positive that comes your way. You've earned it, enjoy it. Finally, stay true to your beliefs. This is your dream. Those who try to stomp on it are probably too miserable to have any of their own.
