Cinematography : Why do you like Black and White Films? by Christopher Binder

Why do you like Black and White Films?

Why do I like Black and White films almost more than I do Color? Well, mainly because White is the color from which all others come from, so in it's simplicity there is actually much complexity. Add Black to the mix, which is the absence of color, and the results can be quite......colorful. Why do you like them?

Mr Bradley

Because colour can be a distraction to the core of the subject. Hence black and white still photography was always loved more than colour. But then I still use a Deardorff Large Format still camera, so I might be biased.

I'm speaking from an artistic sentiment not a technical one.

Hi, interesting post. The craft of the cinematographer is to make a 3D subject into something that can be shown on a 2D projection, so the lighting and focus has to define what the audience should pay attention to. The lighting in black and white films needs to be so much more defined ,as the cinematographer doesn't have colour to separate the subject from the background like in colour films. This is why many of the great mono films are so beautifully lit and constructed. "The Third Man" springs to mind, as does the superb work by Roger Deakins on the Coen brothers 2001 film "The man who wasnt there". Both worth a look if you havent seen them. Best JK
