As a graphic designer I've been able to stay afloat in Chicago but as a screenwriter not many avenues have opened up for me. That being said, I look to make the journey to L.A. For those of you who have lived in the city any length of time I'd would like to hear what your experience has been like. What kind of jobs have you been able to find to keep you afloat as you pursue your dream?
Axzavia, the best thing about being in L.A. is the networking opportunities. Almost everyone you meet is involved in the business. I had jury duty a few months back. One of the other jurors was a working screenwriter and novelist. Another one had twenty plus years as a production designer. Some of the films he worked on won Academy Awards. Seeing people actually making moves and learning how the game is played is inspiring. You start to realize you can actually make it happen if you play your cards right. If you're serious about screenwriting and moving out here, I would suggest finding a writers group. They're helpful not just to workshop material, but they can also share information, help keep you motivated, and sometimes their contacts become your contacts. I was referred to my current manager by a woman who used to be in my writers group and liked my material. In L.A., it's all about who you know.
I appreciate the advice from everyone. I'm trying obtain as much information about L.A. as possible especially anything pertaining to a screenwriters experience of living and working in the area.
The thing people often aren't used to about LA is how spread out it is. You'll spend half your life in traffic.
