Hey there my friends! Names Shannon, I am a Singer/Song Writer and fresh into acting- currently in South Africa. What do you recommend for gaining experience and knowledge? School? If so what schools do you suggest? Or do you know of any quality acting coaches? I am from the US in the Pacific Northwest. Thanks! God Bless!
Nice job. I like the way you put it all together. Well done.
Awesome! Thanks so much!
The best acting schools are on New York and LA. The Acadamy of Dramatic Arts is well respected, but I recommend either the Actors Studio or Strasburg Institute. Those are the foremost and oldest Method Schools.
The Actor's Studio requires an audition, and not everyone gets in. Personally I think on-line coaching might be OK as a supplement, but nothing beats working with a scene partner in person. Also, I find some actors work and work at monologues and then lock up when they have to interact with another actor, so, If you're new to acting and coaching, I would strongly recommend a live and in person learning situation, Also, you gain the critique and support of your peers, and learn how to self critique. Sorry Alle, but I just don't think On-line coaching is good for the beginner. This is my opinion of course, but, I"m not selling anything.
What do you think the biggest mistakes are the actors make in auditions?
Thank you so much for your insight Tony and Alle. All information is gold to me.

Shannon if you can't afford or can't gain entrance into a BIG name school there are quite a number of colleges and universities with excellent acting programs for the person who is just starting out. There are also a lot of very good private teachers. Rule of thumb on finding a private teacher ask other actors or check with SAG AFTRA or other accredited people in the industry. As well you could try your hand auditioning and working in college or indie films, theatre productions or find an agent and start off in commercials... lots of us actors got our start in these ways. I personally started in community theatre some 30 plus yrs ago and found it to be fun open to new people and while it's not on camera it's a great way to learn. I was 14 at the time and quickly moved into commercials and tv shows... just be true to yourself and what you are wanting to achieve as an actor. Don't cut yourself off from theatre if you want to do camera work or vice versa... all training and learning as an actor is important and relevant. Some of the best actors have multiple genres they work in.

You don't need to spend a massive amount on school. Find a great coach, I would suggest looking in any trade magazines or see who's teaching at the major schools and reach out to them for private lessons.
