When a workaholic scientist is called to remote Australia to cure a mysterious disease affecting the Aboriginal people, she must uproot her family from their hectic lives and navigate a new disease and a new way of life.
SYNOPSIS:
Arnhem Land, a remote territory in Australia, is home to the indigenous people and the mysterious Mimi spirits. The Mimi spirits have long served as the guardians and protectors of the Aboriginal people, teaching them the ways of the land and imparting upon them the knowledge and skills needed to survive in the harsh environment. However, despite their vast knowledge and wisdom, the Mimi spirits have been unable to find a cure for a deadly affliction that has been plaguing the Aboriginal people for generations.
As the disease spreads and more and more people fall ill, the Aboriginal people turn to white outsiders for help. Juliet and Tom, two researchers from the outside world, are welcomed into Arnhem Land by Trys, a local guide who takes them to meet Dr. Hazel.
As they set up camp and begin to treat the sick, Juliet is struck by the beauty and resilience of the Aboriginal people and their rich cultural traditions. She is particularly moved by the art and storytelling that is central to their way of life. Tom, on the other hand, is initially overwhelmed by the unfamiliar surroundings and the tales of the Mimi spirits. He becomes frightened and runs off into the forest, where he is bitten by a spider. The Aboriginal people come to his aid, using their traditional healing methods to cure him.
Despite their best efforts, the disease proves to be too powerful for Juliet and Dr. Hazel to overcome. One of their patients, a woman, takes a turn for the worse and passes away, despite their attempts to save her. It becomes clear to the outsiders that this is a formidable enemy, one that will require all of their knowledge and resources to defeat.
