Randall Barnes was born in southern California, but has spent half of his life in Europe. After completing an MA in Applied Linguistics at the University of York (UK) in 1998, he developed a fascination with film sound and went on to complete a Postgraduate Diploma in Sound Design at Bournemouth University (UK) in 2002. This Diploma course deepened his interest in all aspects of film sound: location and post sound recording, editing, mixing, and design. He then spent the next four years writing a PhD thesis on film sound history, theory and practice, which focused primarily on sound's integral role in the storytelling process and how early collaboration with those responsible for sound is crucial and extremely practical. During this time he worked on a wide variety of student projects and was asked to consult on the sound content for a drama entitled ONE (dir. Brown - Nov 2005).
Since graduating in March 2006, Randall first helped design the soundscape for the full-length thriller, MOBIUS (dir. Montalvan - Dec 2006/released Feb 2009). He then went on to record, edit, design, and pre-mix the sound for the full-length horror film, THE UNINVITED (dir. Badway - May 2008). Randall has then go on to be the sole sound designer for a full-length documentary SARAVIA (dir. Montalvan - Dec 2008), the short film 2019: A FUTURE IMAGINED (dir. Montalvan - Dec 2008), the full-length thriller, HOLE (dir. Montalvan - Mar 2010), short drama: ENIGMATA (dir. Eaton - Sept 2010), short horror: RE-MEMBERED (dir. Badway - Aug 2010), short horror: TAEJUNG'S LAMENT (dir. Meglic - Feb 2011), full-length drama, GIRLFRIEND 19 (dir. Boghosian - August 2011), short drama POLLUTION (dir. Travis - March 2012), full-length retro-thriller, THE LEGEND OF THE HILLBILLY BUTCHER (dir. Montalvan - Oct 2012), full-length drama GAIJIN (dr. Chamberlain - September 2013), and documentary BUNGALOW HEAVEN:PRESERVING A NEIGHBORHOOD (dir. Montalvan - April 2014). He's also designed the sound for three of the Sledgehammer Films logos (Mar 2011). He has also published two academic papers online on the sound content of BARTON FINK (Oct 2007) and RAISING ARIZONA (Feb 2008). Randall is currently teaching sound design at Azusa Pacific University.
Unique traits: I have a PhD in Sound Design and over 10 year's experience working as a sound designer on low-budget independent features and shorts. I really enjoy helping filmmakers tell their story through audio, and using my creativity to design unique soundscapes for each film.
