LOVE IN THE TIME OF COVID
By Dennis Manuel

GENRE: Romance, Drama
LOGLINE:

Covid’s turbulent hardships get even trickier for two Asian-American sisters, one a nurse, the other an upscale call girl, when the nurse falls for the other’s john while caring for him.

SYNOPSIS:

LYNN CHEN, 25, an Asian American nurse in an ER unit in NYC, finds life stressful enough with an insanely high rent for her tiny studio apartment, anti-Asian lunatics roaming the subways, twelve hour shifts and a broken heart from a failed relationship. And then Covid hits. Life goes into a tailspin.

She’s terrified for her parents living in Brooklyn, and her younger sister, MOON, who is a very successful upscale prostitute. She begs Moon to stop working during the pandemic, but Moon laughs and says, “Your job is much more dangerous than mine.” When their grandfather in China comes down with Covid Lynn doesn’t know who’s going to die first, her mother from losing her father, her grandmother from losing her husband, or herself from working twenty hour shifts without the proper PPE.

She is blessed by having a neighbor across the hall, BELLA, a black woman with a 6’6” son who protects Lynn from a sleazy neighbor down the hall. Bella has connections. She describes herself as a liaison for many things, even PPE, which she procures for Lynn and her coworkers at no cost.

ELLIOT, 35, the doctor she works for in the hospital, is on the verge of collapse from overwork and a divorce. They lean on each other for support at work, and emotional support, both too exhausted to realize they are falling in love.

Lynn gets a patient, JEREMY, 30s, who comes to the ER with Covid. He can hardly breath and is put on a ventilator. She thinks he's cute. What she doesn't know is that he's one of Moon's johns. What Jeremy doesn't know is that Lynn is Moon's sister.

Jeremy gets better and pursues Lynn. But for Lynn the spark isn’t there. Then Lynn and Moon have a talk one day and realize that Jeremy is Moon’s john, and it’s clear that Jeremy is in love with Asian women. Lynn comes up with a plan to cure him. After all, she’s a nurse.

Jeremy is put in his place and Lynn’s grandfather survives. Bella gets a shipment of vaccines before anyone else does, and Lynn administers the shots. Christmas is upon them and It’s a cause for a celebration. Lynn invites Elliot and tells him to just bring a toothbrush. It’s a big festive Christmas dinner in the hallway of Lynn’s apartment building and it brings everyone together to celebrate life and the end of the pandemic.
