About Jason

A self-proclaimed 80s film nerd with a penchant for thrillers and sci-fi, award-winning international filmmaker Jason Bourque has written, directed and produced a combined 70 features, television movies, series and documentaries.

In 2007 Jason co-wrote and co-directed the theatrical documentary "Shadow Company" narrated by Gerard Butler. A ground-breaking look into the global soldier of fortune industry, the festival hit (SXSW, Hot Docs) was reviewed favorably in the New York Times, Chicago Tribune, Variety and has been used as a teaching tool for the US Senate. Jason co-directed "Darwin's Brave New World" for CBC and ABC Australia, an award-winning docu-drama series shot in five countries. "Music for Mandela", his last feature documentary (writer/ director) shot throughout South Africa, won the People's Choice Award at the Amnesty International Film Festival.

A prolific genre screenwriter in Canada, Jason has written 30 produced scripts for series, features, mini-series and MOWs and has several high-profile writing projects slated for 2022. As a script doctor and ghost writer, he has worked on theatrical films with budgets up to 40 million including for famed Marvel producer Avi Arad. His work has aired on Disney XD, SyFy, Lifetime and broadcasters throughout the world. Recent writing credits include "The Fixer, a television mini-series for Sonar Entertainment, and episodes for the new high-octane thriller series “Insomnia” for Starz International.

Working as a dramatic director continues to be Jason's passion. While developing his own theatrical feature work, he directs for Lifetime, SyFy, Hallmark and Netflix. Recent credits include 2 episodes of “The Chronicle Mysteries” and the feature “Grand Theft Auto Girls”. His theatrical thriller "Black Fly" (writer/director/producer) received a nomination for Best Canadian Film as well as 10 Leo Award nominations. It won for Best Male Lead Actor. Accolades include Best Feature at the Arizona Underground Film Festival and the UBCP / ACTRA Award for Best Newcomer. Jason's latest award-winning political thriller "Drone", (director/co-writer) starring Emmy-award winner Sean Bean, has been an indie success story. Described by New York Times as a “proficient thriller”, “a simmering on-target drama” by Globe and Mail and “a suspenseful and satisfying thriller” by Toronto Star, “Drone” was the #1 Indie and #2 thriller on iTunes after a theatrical release in the US.

Recently Jason directed two episodes of "Medinah", the world's first Arabic / English science fiction series shot in Qatar. It was introduced at Comic-Con International, making the Rolling Stones’ "Top 25 Things to See List". As a producer, recent feature film releases include the Lionsgate romantic comedy “The Right One” featuring Iliza Shlesinger and the LGBTQ family drama “When Time Got Louder” starring Willow Shields of the Hunger Games series.
