WHO I AM (WORKING TITLE)

WHO I AM (WORKING TITLE)
By Jaimy Rose Gardner

GENRE: Drama, Comedy
LOGLINE:

Preparedness meets opportunity when a 30 year-old professionally-trained dancer is given the chance of a lifetime to do what she thought was no longer possible - live her dream.

SYNOPSIS:

Fear is powerful, and as most of us know, when we allow it to rule our emotions and overwhelm our rational, it can make us do things we never thought in a million years we’d do. That’s what happened to our main character, Allie Jenkins. Allie trained for years to become a professional dancer only to bury that dream at just twenty-two years old simply because she was scared of the unknown and the uncertainty of the industry. She returned to her hometown of Las Vegas and got a ”real job”, but she continued to take dance classes with other working dance professionals in the area. Fast forward eight years, Allie’s still at her “real job” and is she older than most of the dance professionals she takes class with, but when the music starts and the teacher yells “5,6,7,8”, there’s little to no distinction between her and the other dancers. So much so that when a talent scout happens to be at the right place at the right time when Allie’s taking class one night, he invites her to come audition for a new musical that’s set to be workshopped for Broadway. With no agent, little experience, and knowing no one, Allie goes. And on a technicality, she gets the job as a swing – the person who learns all the choreography tracks for all the ensemble dancers for every number of the show… a that’s when her real fight begins.

Allie’s journey from a never-been to a will-be will be carried out over eight episodes in a limited series with a working title of “Who I Am”. The series will deal with 1) recognizing that you have no timestamp for WHEN you achieve success; 2) not letting your past dictate your future; and 3) being unencumbered by the innumerable limitations the world tries to put on you. These three truths are hard for anyone to grasp. For a thirty-year-old female dancer with limited industry experience, it can seem nearly impossible… until it’s done.

And Allie’s journey to Broadway will not be easy. Antagonists will include bullies, ageism, creative politics, weak leaders, injuries. You’ll watch Allie fall behind… only to see her fight her way back. She’ll find her tribe, which will include an old school New York dance instructor and an eccentric yet loveable neighbor. And most importantly, you’ll see Allie’s journey lead her to become a full-fledged cast member. Much like Vince Papale of the Philadelphia Eagles, Allie may be older and less experienced than most of her castmates, but she has something they don’t – nothing to lose, and everything to gain. And like Cassie from A Chorus Line, Allie will fight for her place in the show because she believes in what she can bring to the table, even if no one else does. Because for Allie, dancing isn’t just what she does. It’s who she is. She’s a west coast personality with an east coast mindset. So when everything is set against her from the beginning and all anyone can see is how she’ll likely fail, she will have the nerve to stop and ask - “But what if I succeed?”
