SYNOPSIS:

EPISODE 12, SYNOPSIS, DAS WORT

Where is Luther? All of Christendom wants to know, even his friends and Katharina von Bora, nun and future wife.

Martin turns up at Wartburg Castle, home of Prince Frederick, deeply involved in translating the Bible into German and writing several new pamphlets. It is not easy, and Martin must battle demonic spirits to complete the task.

Martin has divine help, however, from Mike, the Archangel. Translating Scripture deepens his faith and makes him stronger.

In Rome, Pope Leo X receives a visit from Cardinal Albrecht of Mainz, who delivers Luther’s new pamphlets. They attack the Church and call for reforms. Leo is outraged and vows to see Luther killed who has so far foiled all previous attempts.

Martin’s friends and fellow theologians, Andreas Karlstadt, Philip Melanchthon, with Wittenberg University students, are summoned to Wartburg. The result is an enthusiastic reunion with their leader of the Reformation.

At Christmas 1521, Martin makes a surprise visit to Wittenberg in time for the Christmas service at Stadtkirche of Saint Mary’s Cathedral. It is the first service where a Protestant version of the Mass is celebrated with wine served to the laity.

In England, William Tyndale is introduced to the series. An important theologian of the Reformation, Tyndale begins his life as Latin tutor to a minor noble’s children. He relates important Christian history and meets Bishop Tunstall, a stern theologian of the Church and future enemy.

Tyndale’s hosts provide a meeting place for young English reformers to learn what sacrifices are necessary to be a Christian. While there, Bishop Tunstall initiates a surprise raid. The reformers barely escape.

In the Holy Roman Empire, Charles V and aunt, Margaret of Austria, meet with papal legates, Cardinal Adrian and Girolamo Aleandro, theology professor at the Sorbonne, to discuss a new treaty. It proposes a realignment of power against Francis, King of France, to combat his plans for expansion, threats from the Protestant movement, and the invasion of Hungary by Suleiman, ruler of the Ottoman Empire. Pope Leo believes the survival of Christianity depends on the success of this treaty.
