About Bastian

Bastian began his career as a production assistant for various TV and feature documentaries. As a producer, he gained experience in German children's television, including the award-winning stop-motion classic UNSER SANDMÄNNCHEN (rbb/KiKA) and the popular first season of MOPPI UND DER LECKERLADEN (rbb/KiKA). Following his time in children’s television, he was involved in several documentary projects, most notably YOURS IN FREEDOM, BILL BAIRD, directed by two-time Academy Award-nominated Rebecca Cammisa, where he handled archival clearance. At the same time he was also actively involved in the developing fiction feature films and series. His work on documentaries and fiction projects further fueled his passion for impact-driven storytelling. As of 2024, Bastian is a member of the Queer Media Society. LAVENDER NIGHTS marks his screenwriting debut, portraying queer life in Germany before and after the rise of the Nazis in the 1930s.

Baird, now 91, looks back at his life and mission that began in the early 1960s when he became the clinical director of EMKO Pharmaceuticals, a company that manufactured and sold contraceptive foam. He saw a great deal of suffering in the hospitals he visited and was profoundly changed. Cammisa weaves in the present-day story of Jada Portillo, an Arkansas high school student whose research for presentation on the history of birth control connects her with Baird. An inspiring and deeply felt look at what one person achieves, and who he inspires, in the pursuit of justice.
