DANCING ON A TIGHTROPE

DANCING ON A TIGHTROPE
By Jesse Kalfel

GENRE: War, Drama
LOGLINE:

A strikingly beautiful and determined Jewish woman, hunted by a ruthless SS officer, teams up with a daring Chilean diplomat in Nazi-occupied Paris to save hundreds from the death camps. Based on a true story.

SYNOPSIS:

The screenplay begins in the idyllic French countryside as we meet Nadja, a beautiful 26-year-old woman, and her male friend, Laszlo, an attractive 30-year-old man. The pair enjoy riding their motorcycles and then have a quick tryst as they take a dip in a lake spontaneously. The story sets on in this carefree, jovial vibe, as the pair meet up with a couple of Nadja's journalist friends for drinks and a night of fun. However, this is offset by a couple of intricate details that indicate this story probably won't be maintaining this vibe for long. After a swim with Lazlo, they find a fisherman's shack where they change into their clothes. Nadja finds a Hitler poster in this random fisherman's shack, with an ominous warning by Laszlo, as he tells Nadja to be careful during her visit with her family in Vienna. This suspicion is quickly confirmed as Nadja's visit with her family morphs from heartwarming to tragic, as Hitler descends on Austria, and her father is taken to the Metropole (Gestapo HQ) for his inflammatory remarks about Hitler. This is overheard by an employee who later becomes an ongoing character of evil who seeks revenge on Nadja which is revealed during the movie. The script paints the scenes as we watch the horrors that descend as the Nazi influence begins taking over. The audience becomes engrossed as we watch the previously kind neighbors and townspeople morph into rageful monsters, pillaging Jewish businesses and assaulting Jewish people. The audience can be immersed in the story because of the great detail put into the harrowing scenes transpiring, and also the characters as they experience this hate. Nadja serves as a wonderfully complex and dynamic female lead. The audience watches as she attempts to safely navigate her role in combatting the Nazi agenda and saving Jews from being murdered and tortured. The audience supports her character for her bravery and her loyalty towards not only her family but her fellow Jewish people. The script shows complexity in her, which keeps the audience engaged, by depicting her flaws through her tumultuous and romantic relationship with Armando, the Chilean Ambassador posted in Paris who is married and much older than Nadja who helps Nadja to save Jews and other political outcasts. The character writing isn't kept exclusive to our main character, as it allows the audience to look fondly at Armando as well. Despite his infidelity, the audience can't help but acknowledge his bravery and selflessness in assisting hundreds of people, being persecuted by the Nazi party for various reasons, to escape to safety, even if temporarily. Based on a true story about the writer's mother.
