I am a produced writer with over 24 years of film and television production experience. I have written or co-written 35 feature length film scripts... okay, so that might sound impressive, but you gotta remember, the first dozen or so were mostly crap, but this is how we learn our craft; we write. Getting into television now and I love the long term story mapping. Have developed 3 pitch packages (pilot episode and pitch doc including multi-season arc mapping) to date and working on 5 more this year.
I spent the last two years teaching screenwriting for the Shanghai Vancouver Film School in China and doing some guest lecturing at Vancouver Film School here at home. I love teaching but I gotta be honest, I love writing more. I will be introducing some seminars this year on deep structure and subtext but they will be one or two day workshops at the most.
Currently I am a Screenwriter and a Script Consultant for independent production companies developing feature films, documentaries and television series with clients in Canada, the US, Africa and Europe. I love doing consulting; it's inspiring to see so many companies striving for excellence whether it's a genre movie or a passion project... a little time invested to make the story sing makes all the difference.
On the production side, my experience includes over 150 film and television projects as an Assistant Cameraman. I cut my teeth as a camera assistant. The experience made me a much better writer and a much more effective collaborator with producers and directors. I have retired from set work but I still get that itch now and again... especially after teaching in Shanghai which included on-set mentoring of literally hundreds of short films.
My produced Screenwriting credits include the short feature "Bombshell" which premiered in Los Angeles, the award winning feature film “Reach For Me” (Critic’s Choice Award Oldenburg Film Festival, Best Feature and Best of Festival Lake Arrowhead Film Festival, Centerpiece Gala Screening Downtown Film Festival Los Angeles, Audience Choice Best Feature San Diego Film Festival, AARP Movies for Grownups Award), as Story Editor for the feature film “A Shine of Rainbows”, as Script Consultant for the television movie “Taken in Broad Daylight”, as Story Consultant for the feature length documentary “Nash”, the story of NBA MVP Steve Nash, and as Creative Consultant for the educational comedy series “Terry Jones and Rob Buckman’s: Top Ten Tips For Health” with Terry Jones of “Monty Python”.
My current projects include the television series “Cathedral” for Third Line Entertainment and “355” for Momentum Films (US), and two original feature film projects for First Breath Films (US), “Kiss The Sky” and “Turtle Man”. I'm also authoring the filmmaker's guide "Shot Through the Heart: Deep Structure and Subtext for Maximum Emotional Impact" which will also be a seminar series that I will bring out this year.
So basically I'm a very fortunate guy who loves to work!
