Mary O’Neill grew up in the beach side suburb of Bronte in Sydney, Australia. Her father Brian is of Irish decent and her mother Keri, is of Eurasian decent. From a young age, Mary showed interest in acting. A semester at Benjamin Franklin Middle School in Daly City, California, cemented her passion for the arts as she enrolled in her first acting class. Growing up as the second youngest of 5 children, Mary attended St Vincent’s College in Sydney where she was actively involved in Theatre, music and design. After graduating from St Vincent’s College, Mary went on to work in property law as a legal secretary in order to support her acting ambitions. She attended the intensive Conservatory of Acting program at the New York Film Academy in Australia (Village Roadshow Studios, Gold Coast), for which she studied Method Acting and explored the work of Konstantin Stanislavski, Sanford Meisner, Lee Strasberg, Stella Adler and Michael Chekhov.
Artists, both Actors and Musicians that have inspired, and continue to inspire Mary include (but are not limited to) River Phoenix, Tom Hanks, Johnny Cash, Julianne Moore, Jared Leto, Meryl Streep, Cate Blanchett, Joaquin Phoenix, Brad Pitt, Leonardo Dicaprio, and James Franco. Some of her favourite films include: My Own Private Idaho, Lords of Dogtown, Walk the Line, Almost Famous, Braveheart, Inglorious Bastards, Gladiator and Forest Gump. She considers Steven Spielberg, Martin Scorsese and Quentin Tarantino to be creative geniuses.
