About Josh

Joshua Tate is an award-winning writer, director, producer, and lawyer from a family of disability rights advocates, including a cousin with Down syndrome. He is a Student Emmy winner, San Francisco Film Society grantee, and Film Independent fellow in screenwriting and directing.

Josh has shepherded acclaimed performances from experienced and beginning actors alike, including actors with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). Josh’s first feature LOVE LAND, which starred a lead cast with IDD, won the Audience Award and Outstanding Ensemble Cast at the 2014 New Orleans Film Festival and is currently streaming on Amazon and Flix Premiere. His short film Guest Room premiered at SXSW, streamed on Hulu as an NBCU Short Film Festival finalist, was featured in a HuffPost op-ed, and is a Vimeo Staff Pick with over 148,000 views.

Josh has over a decade of experience in independent film production. He served as production manager on SLEIGHT (Sundance 2016) and FARAH GOES BANG (Tribeca 2013), was a production coordinator on FLOWER (Tribeca 2017), and was a producer on CATCHING UP (New Orleans, Atlanta 2019), LOVE LAND (New Orleans 2014, Cleveland 2014, St. Louis 2015), and nearly a dozen short films from USC and UT Austin. At USC, he was a teaching assistant to producer John Watson.

Josh holds an MFA in film production from USC, a radio-television-film degree from UT Austin, and a JD from UCLA, where he was co-editor-in-chief of the UCLA Entertainment Law Review. In 2020, Public Counsel awarded Josh its Pro Bono Award for his advocacy for immigrants’ rights, and his advocacy for foster children with mental illness garnered recognition from the Western Center on Law and Poverty.
