Hey Niki H - hope you’re having a great IYW! Christmas music is floating around, the air is crisp, the holiday movie season is upon us. It’s A Wonderful Life is always my kick off movie. Excited for all to come.

It also means that one of the other cinematic seasonal traditions is back as well… the conversation about Die Hard. Is it a Christmas movie or not?

Hi Niki H - thanks for all you do! Hope you have a wonderful and safe Thanksgiving! I started my holiday season movie watch with "Batman Returns". Next on the list is Christmas Vacation, Home Alone and of course, Die Hard. ;o)

LOL. In a nutshell: Julie has the audio tracks. We had a discussion about techniques. Julie posted an MP3 of some examples of the issues. I loaded up some tools and did a quick fiddle (about 15 minutes with Isotope RX adv) to see what might be possible and uploaded that back for Julie. She was pleased and went back to the director with the options of ADR, fixing or reshooting. She (and the Director) now have the choice of strategy and then possibly to talk to one of the many people around the world (including yourself) who have offered to process this material. Ken wants to hear a before and after perhaps to know who to work with for his projects. I hope this helps :)

Aha...catch up time. So down to nitty gritty... where do I get hold of the example audio? Also mp3 would not be the best file format to do sophisticated processing on, due to the amount of number crunching that has already been done converting to an mp3. What would be ideal: A short section of the problematic audio, about 15 seconds with the thump right in the middle at about 7-8 seconds. If there are widely different magnitudes of thump, then 2-3 examples. Audio format should be as originally recorded with no bounce down, probably at 16 or 24bit WAV (uncompressed) file recorded at 48Khz. I seem to remember someone saying that it was recorded via a camera mounted mic. So depending on the type and quality of the camera, hopefully the audio recording settings will have been left at default which are normally as above. Best to send the files to me via dropbox or similar. True. What I did was a proof of concept for her just to see if there was any hope. I showed there was and now we are all wondering what will happen next in this project. There is no denying that the better the quality of the starting audio, the better the final result: mic placement and choice, talent performance, control of background noise, recording quality, resolution of the audio and then the tools used in post and final delivery. I wish you well, all who work in this area as I hope to get more work myself as I expand into this industry from my work with music.

Hello everyone, thank you for your comments and advice, but I'm closing this topic thread because I'm still editing the film and have a long way to go ! The reason I posted this topic in the first place was to see whether or not I could possibly use this footage and thus did not want to waste time using it if indeed the sound could not be corrected. Everyone is free to continue with this thread, but please do not expect a response from me. Note: maybe before posting it's best to read the previous posts because some people are proposing the same advice, and having the same comments, etc. Again, MERCI BEAUCOUP BONNE JOURNEE ! :-)
