Dr. Willie Bouwer is a senior lecturer and Head of School: Media and Design at STADIO with over 20 years of experience teaching students from diverse social and cultural backgrounds.
He has a Doctor of Technology: Motion Picture Production and a Masters of Technology in Motion Picture Production with a research topic on the impact of the Uncanny Valley effect on the perception of animated three-dimensional humanlike characters. His doctoral thesis researched the influence human actors have on the perceived humanness of digital actors. Currently, there is a lot of research going on in the creation of realistic humans for film and bridging the Uncanny Valley. His research interest revolves around the interaction of human actors with digital actors and how they impact on each other when they are not sharing the same space on a film set. He is also currently an editorial board member for 'The Computer Games Journal' (Springer) as well as a Programme Accreditation Evaluator for the South African Council on Higher Education. Dr. Willie Bouwer started his Master of Philosophy in Higher Education at Stellenbosch University in 2020 with a research topic on problem-centered curriculum implementation in the creative arts.
Unique traits: My greatest strength is firstly my strong sense of loyalty and commitment to provide a meaningful education to students. Secondly, my ability to develop and instill the necessary skills in students, which they thought they don't possess and thereby making them curious about their own abilities and seeking further development.
